During prolonged driving tours, off-road, or circuit racing an engine mount may split at the point the rubber joins the upper or lower plate, these brackets are made with the purpose of limiting the engine movement around the front chassis crossmember in the event of an engine mount failure.

They won't stop an engine mount breaking but they will limit the travel of an unleashed engine!
